Synchronous generator consists of a rotating axis that is connected to the turbine and is called a rotor and a fixed part that contains three phase windings that is called a stator. As the rotor rotates, the flux caused by its magnetism passes through the three-phase windings and induces three-phase voltages in them. The magnetic property of the rotor is also created either with a permanent magnet or by using a direct current to induce electric magnetism in it. The last option is a better choice because we have more control over the flux and therefore the induced voltage.
According to the type of core, synchronous generators consist of two types of flat/cylindrical poles and raised poles. Prominent pole generators usually have a large number of poles and are therefore used in low rotor speeds/high frequency electrical requirements. The smooth pole type usually has fewer poles (0 or 7) and is therefore used at high speeds. This type of generator usually has better power than the raised poles.
